Born in Matanzas, Cuba, Janny Rodriguez was an 8-year-old when she and her family fled the island by boat in March 1999 in search of a better life in the United States. Turned back once, the family tried again months later. Only as she became a young adult did Janny fully realize just how close their small boats--taking on water and with engines failing-- came to foundering in the Florida Straits. They eventually stumbled onto Big Pine Key in their second journey and a new, uncharted life awaited in Miami. For more about her journey click here.
Janny became the first in her family to go to college. She earned a B.S. in Telecommunications from the University of Florida. Janny began her career doing Spanish-language radio news for Florida’s 89.1 WUFT FM, “Noticias.” At the time, it was the only news outlet for the Hispanic community in Gainesville. She started in television news in 2013 as a reporter, anchor, and producer at WAGT in Augusta, Georgia. Two years later, Janny joined the reporting team at WTLV in Jacksonville, Florida.
In 2018, Janny joined the WPTV NewsChannel 5 team in West Palm Beach as a morning reporter. Today Janny is the co-anchor for WPTV’S 7 p.m. newscast and solo anchors at 11 p.m. She also co-anchors for WFLX Fox 29, a duopoly partner, at 10 p.m.
Janny says her life story inspired her to pursue a career in multimedia journalism. She knows firsthand what it is like to need someone to give voice to your hopes, dreams, and struggles. Janny’s empathy for the community she serves and her thanks for the community that embraced her family are the touchstones that motivate her each day.
Janny resides in Wellington, Florida, with her husband and two young children.
